The 2014 Enclos Tourmaline, a new kid on the Pomerol block courtesy of Peter Kwok, comes from a single-hectare parcel of Merlot located slap-bang opposite Château Clinet. It has a refined bouquet with ebullient red cherry and crushed strawberry scents laced with black truffle and sandalwood. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a keen line of acidity, precise with a crescendo of black fruit towards the finish that has great persistence. This has outstanding potential.
Love the ripe-berry, chocolate and bay-leaf aromas that follow through to a full body, velvety tannins and a fresh finish. Delicious and juicy. Needs time to soften but so good.
The 2014 Enclos Tourmaline is 100% Merlot from a tiny parcel in Peter Kwok’s property located on the plateau of Pomerol, between Chateau Clinet and Chateau Feytit-Clinet. This beauty is a terrific success in the vintage and offers more texture, richness and depth than most. Black cherries, currants, smoke, acacia flowers, and damp earth nuances all emerge from this ripe, gamey, layered, medium to full-bodied Pomerol that has character as well as elegance. It’s already drinking nicely, yet will keep for 15-20 years. 2018 - 2038
The Enclos Tourmaline 2014 comes from a 0.5-hectare parcel of Merlot that was hitherto part of Château La Patache, now owned by Vietnamese-born Peter Kwok. Therefore, it is essentially a tête de cuvée. It is situated directly opposite Château Clinet on Pomerol's coveted blue clay, so it enjoys a prime position, the vineyard manager Jérôme Aguirre, formerly working for the late Catherine-Père Vergé. It is fermented entirely in new French oak barrels (vinification intégrale.) It has a perfumed, rose petal scented bouquet with black cherries and raspberry fruit that is nicely defined and integrated with the oak. The palate is well balanced with supple tannin, well judged acidity, quite sensuous in the mouth with a long, lightly peppered finish that expresses the Pomerol terroir with style. The nearest comparison is that of La Violette, one for those who prefer their Pomerol on the opulent side.
