Jesuitengarten Grosses Gewächs, Von Buhl 2015

Tasting Notes

The 2015 Forster Jesuitengarten Riesling trocken GG opens golden-yellow in color, though still cloudy. It is deep, ripe, rich and with mealy, crushed-stone flavors and lemon aromas. Full-bodied, round and piquant on the palate, this is a very elegant and salty Riesling. The wine has power and a ripe, intense and aromatic fruit. However, it does not have the depth, complexity, and incredible purity and tension of the Pechstein—and even not of the Ungeheuer, at this stage.

Smoky, herbal and floral on the nose with complex ripe apple and struck flint notes. The palate is steely and taut with citrus acidity. Layers of pithy lemon, ripe apple, herbs, peaches and smoke all come through. This is powerful and complex with a wide spectrum of flowers, fruits and spices. Still incredibly youthful and structured by high acidity, the precision and length show this to be a wine with great ageing potential despite its flavour complexity already at this young stage.
