Tasting Notes

This Haut-Medoc performed spectacularly on the two occasions I tasted it from bottle, even eclipsing its impressive showing from cask. It looks to be every bit as powerful as the 2000 ... not an easy achievement. A fabulous sleeper of the vintage, it tastes more like a first-growth than an unclassified offering. Its inky/blue/purple color is accompanied by a spectacular bouquet of lead pencil shavings, ink, blackberries, cedar, and earth. Full-bodied, with terrific texture, fabulous concentration, and moderately high tannin, this massive, atypical 2001 must be tasted to be believed. A brilliant achievement! Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020+.

Very much darker and blacker than most earlier vintages. Lots of nervous energy here and a hint of cocoa without excessive sweetness. Much less complex than the 2000 and still much stricter but it has the elements necessary for a long life. Rather sleek. No puppy fat. Drink 2012-2025 Date tasted 24th Sep 09

A complete effort, the dense blue/purple-colored 2001 reveals classic, pure notes of creme de cassis, minerals, and subtle new oak. Layered, voluminous, and expansive, with enough acidity to provide vibrancy, and high but sweet tannin, it is a long-lived classic from the superb, northern Medoc estate of Sociando-Mallet. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022.
