Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Bouchard Père et Fils 2013

Tasting Notes

Interestingly this is not quite as ripe as the Chapelle though it is notably spicier with its expressive nose of menthol, various red berries and earth. There is excellent intensity, punch and minerality to the large-scaled flavors that possess markedly better depth, particularly on the explosively long and beautifully well-balanced finale. This is wonderfully rich yet there is a certain reserve and a firm tannic spine that suggest that this should age effortlessly.

The 2013 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is showing beautifully, bursting from the glass with a maturing bouquet of wild berries, blood orange, black truffles, spices and rich forest floor. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, broad and enveloping, with melting tannins, a generous core of fruit and a long, penetrating finish. In keeping with the vintage—which was characterized by long hang time but cool conditions—it's a Clos de Bèze that displays mature, even autumnal fruit tones as well as tangy acids, making for a wine that's simultaneously supple and penetrating. The finest of these cellar selections from Bouchard, this will drink well for a decade.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru has a complex and vivacious bouquet with layers of red berry fruit, minerals and spice, a multifaceted aromatic profile that compels you to keep coming back and dunking your nose into the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite a lot of new oak although it is neatly enmeshed into the fruit, redcurrant, red cherries and strawberry towards the finish. There is a vanilla-laced aspect to this Clos-de-Bèze at the moment but that will recede with time. This is an excellent, satisfying Clos de Bèze from Bouchard Père & Fils. Tasted September 2016.
