Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos Saint-Jean 2003

Tasting Notes

The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits loads of garrigue, seaweed, licorice, salty sea breezes, pepper, earth, and plenty of sweet black cherry/kirsch notes in a full-bodied, opulent, fleshy and seductive style. It is hard to resist, and I am sure the alcohol is pretty lofty given the vintage conditions. This wine should drink well for at least a decade.

The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape continues to drink fabulously, with its complex kirsch, leather, dried underbrush and spiced meat-driven profile. Rich, seamless and nicely concentrated, with some still-kicking tannin on the palate, it should be consumed over the coming 3-4 years as well.

The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits superb aromas of herbes de Provence, ground pepper, and jammy currant and cherry fruit. It is a big, full-bodied, fleshy, concentrated effort made from a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 20% Cinsault. Because of high glycerin, heady alcohol, and lush personality, it should drink well young, and last for 12-14 years. Kudos to Clos Saint-Jean and oenologist Philippe Cambie for fashioning some of the best wines of the vintage!
