Côte Rôtie, Domaine Jean-Paul Jamet 2014

Tasting Notes

Both 2014s showed well. The 2014 Côte Rôtie is elegant, medium-bodied, seamless and already thoroughly enjoyable, with lots of raspberry and blackberry fruit, bouquet garni, pepper, and violet aromas and flavors. It will be interesting to see if this wine closes down with a year or two in bottle, but I suspect it will drink nicely for 15 years or so. 2016 - 2031

Sample 1 - Gerine:
First to be picked (so presumably affected by drosophila fly). Destemmed. But 75% whole bunch in general (‘which proves that the raisins were healthy’). Subtle and powdery nose. Relatively low acid. Fine tannins. Very gentle.
Sample 2 - mixture:
Whole bunch. Good crimson. Light fragrant nose. Quite racy and very whole-bunch fresh. Light and lacy. Just a little lean on the end. Presumably many more months in cask will round this out.
Sample 3 - mixture with lots of Fongeant
Very deep crimson. Hint of saltiness. Very round and charming. Lively. This could almost be drunk now. Refined and round.
Sample 4 - more rustic parcels.
Dark crimson. Black voluptuous fruits on the nose. Quite enough ripeness. Firm on the end, the chewy element. Dry finish.
Sample 5 - mainly Landonne with a little Côte Rozier, Floral and polished tannins on the end. Fine salty tannins. Lovely perfume here – classic Côte Rôtie.

Slightly rubbery and reductive on the nose, the 2014 is hard to get into at the moment. With air, there is a strong white- and black-pepper note together with ripe red fruit. Young and chalky on the palate, there are good bones here for those willing to wait. It should be silky, cool and refined in a few years’ time. (TP)
