Tasting Notes

Once again reduction flattens the nose. The attractively lilting and energetic middle weight flavors possess a bit more depth that carries over to the lightly mineral-inflected, balanced and ever-so-mildly austere finale. This is also very Chambolle in character with very fine tannins.

These are forty year-old vines, whereas those for the straight Chambolle are a bit closer to fifty these days. Nevertheless, the Clos le Village is just a touch more refined and precise on both the nose and palate than the above wine, delivering a really lovely bouquet of red and black cherries, chalky minerality, woodsmoke, mustard seed, rose petals and new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and tightly-knit out of the blocks, with a fine core, superb backend focus and vibrancy and a long, ripely tannic finish. This will just nose out the straight Chambolle in 2014, but both are excellent. 2022-2055.

John Gilman, View From the Cellar (62), April 2016

Scented and invitingly pretty on the nose – with depth and generosity on the palate to undergird that perfume. Juicy, lightly spiced and full of life. Not for the very long term but deliciously scented pleasure. 2018 - 2025
