Rivesaltes, Domaine Casenobe 1977

Tasting Notes

The 1977 Rivesaltes from Domaine de la Casenobe, which had been bottled for two or three years, has a deep tawny hue. Philippe Gayral had little information about this although speculated that it comprises more white than black grape varieties. The domaine itself stopped making wine at the end of the 1980s. The bouquet is beautiful: very harmonious and quite intense, scents of mandarin, orange rind, wax resin—quite sappy and maybe earthier than other Rivesaltes. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and a nice bitter edge from orange rind and marmalade notes. It's not a powerful Rivesaltes, and maybe I would have liked a little more viscosity on the finish, but otherwise, this is just a delicious, refined Rivesaltes that should age beautifully if you choose to do so. Blackish gamboge. A bit cheesy on the nose. Very sweet and round. Pruny flavours. Relatively low acid and heat on the end. Just a bit sticky and simple.
