Tasting Notes

The 2014 Riesling Pechstein opens clear, discreet but complex and really distinctive in its coolish, flinty and mineral aromatics. The wine is still restrained and very aristocratic on both nose and palate, but its tension, concentration and long, salty/mineral expression is remarkable. This bone dry (0.2 grams per liter of residual sugar), firmly structured and vitalizing racy Pechstein does not need any sweetness because it is so concentrated (picked with 20 hectoliters per hectare), mineral and complete. This is great dry Riesling with food, especially raw fish, since it does not add anything alien but accompanies like a great Champagne Brut Nature.

Some might call the combination of wet earthy and herbaceous aromas an acquired scent, but I find it very attractive in its idiosyncrasy. Crunchy green fruit and herbaceous elements make quite an impact on the palate, and a gentle sweet note on the tip of the tongue is a conciliatory gesture as herbaceous and earthy mineral notions begin to get a grip. It also appears to rely on a smidgeon of barrique to add to its already impressive substance and potential. (MS)
