From Jean-Christophe Meyrou, ex winemaker at La Violette and Le Gay and now making up and coming star Enclos Tournaline, comes a unique Cotes de Castillon, Chateau le Rey "Les Rocheuses", which looks to stand out from the crowd both in terms of quality, and with its Burgundy-shaped bottle.
An innovative Castillon, partly made in amphorae. Complex nose of fresh herbs and violets, the blue fruit slowly growing as the wine aerates, until it pours from the wine. Serious tannin structure, but without feeling at all massive. In fact, it has striking lightness and vitality on the palate and a really minerally finish. Drink or hold.
Fragrance, perfume the nose is floral and fresh the start of the palate bright with purity of flavour. Firm in the middle black cherry and cassis and although light with fresh black fruits at the back there is sweet fruit on the finish. 2023-30
This is the limestone version in the Le Rey portfolio and the difference between this wine and the clay version, Les Argileuses (q.v.) is startling. In an effort to highlight the difference in the soils and using a ‘Burgundian’ philosophy, this wine is a lot more gamey and tangy and with more obvious red fruit. It’s a fascinating wine with very tart acidity which lifts the cherry fruit and the dryness is stunningly mouth-watering from the chalky soils.
The pureness of this is so beautiful with wonderful depth of fruit and balance. Full body and flavors of licorice and berries. Round and polished tannins. Resounding purity. No new wood. No sulfur yet here.
