The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape, a sleeper of the vintage, is one of the finest traditional cuvees they have made. Its dark ruby/purple color is followed by a medium to full-bodied wine revealing classic Provencal aromas of pepper, garrigue, black cherries, plums, and a hint of earth. Pure, broad, and savory with silky tannins and a lush personality, this fruit-filled Chateauneuf is ideal for drinking over the next 10-12 years.
One of the ancient families of Chateauneuf du Pape, the Boirons trace their origins and winemaking back to the mid-1800s. All of the following 2007s performed as well or slightly better than they did prior to bottling, always a good sign. It appears that only one wine will be offered in 2008.
The entry level cuvee from this terrific estate is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape, and it checks in as a mix of 75% Grenache, 12% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, with the balance other permitted varieties. I should have bought a case of this as it’s as classic Southern Rhône as they come and offers ripe, full-throttle notes of cured meats, black raspberries, incense and spice. Full-bodied, complex and loaded with character, it has impeccable tannin quality and will keep for another decade.
Grenache 75%, Mourvèdre 12%, Syrah 10%, Vaccarese-Counoise-Cinsault 3%. 12-18 months in cuves, foudres and demi muids.
Very healthy shaded crimson. Tarry foxgloves, super-ripe nose. Very sweet and round and luscious. Animal notes already. Super lush and should please those looking for power, even if the tannins are just a tad lean.
