Pettenthal Grosses Gewächs Versteigerung, Weingut Keller 2016

Tasting Notes

This immediately catches one’s attention through its magnificent cool nose made of mint, white flowers, smoke, sea breeze and orange blossom. The wine is ethereally light and airy on the palate yet offers immense omplexity and intensity. One is then left with stunning salty, smoky and spicy elements in the hugely persistent finish. The wine literally takes one’s breath away as it leaves one with a great feeling of freshness and multilayered
complexity in the after-taste. This is a magnificent dry Riesling in the making! 2026-2041

The stunning 2016 Pettenthal GG was sold at auction in Bad Kreuznach in September of this year. The wine is a very refined 12.5 percent octane and delivers marvelous promise in its pure, complex and almost exotic bouquet of lemon, white peach, wild yeasts, a gentle touch of petrol, really lovely red slate undertow, lemongrass and citrus zest. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and laser-like, with a lovely core, snappy, ripe acidity, fine mid-palate depth and simply amazing backend mineral drive on the very, very long, electric finish. This is a very, very young wine and will need at least a decade to start to stir, but its ultimate complexity is already laid out for all to see and all that is necessary here is plenty of self-restraint to allow it to reach its apogee. 2026-2075

The 2016 Pettenthal Riesling GG (Auction) is clear, deep, pure and spicy on the nose, very intense and smoky. On the palate, this is a lush and juicy, intense yet pure, fresh and firmly structured grand cru that was pressed very slowly for more than two days. It is very straight, tight and salty, provided with fine tannins and an impressively powerful, intense and persistent finish. This is a great dry Pettenthal that I’d like to taste a few years from now. Driink 2021-2037.
