Moderately strong wood and menthol elements frame the aromas of essence of red cherry, forest floor, rose petal, sauvage and newly turned earth hints. The rich, intense and mineral-inflected broad-shouldered flavors are an exercise in restraint, all wrapped in a balanced, austere and incredibly persistent finish. The old vines are very much apparent as this velvety yet very serious effort displays excellent power and like many of these Gevrey grands crus, is a wine that is not only built-to-age but one that is going to need plenty of it.
The Chapelle-Chambertin, from 80-year-old vines which were formerly part of the Domaine Clair-Daü, is superb this year, wafting from the glass with notes of rose petal, cherry and cocoa powder. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and elegantly open-knit, with supple tannins and a lovely core of supple, sappy fruit.
Cask sample. Lightish crimson. Fragrant with sweet red cherry, charming and seductive. Relatively slight on the palate. The tannins are super-fine and the freshness is there but the density is less than I might have expected in the middle.
Drink 2022-2030
The 2016 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very well-defined bouquet, a melange of red and black fruit, truffle and smoke gently unfolding in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, quite tensile and focused but very precise and fanning out with confidence on the tender finish. As good, if not better than, the 2015 Chapelle-Chambertin from Jadot. Drink 2021 - 2050.
