Gelber Muskateller Loibenberg Smaragd, Weingut F.X. Pichler 2016

Tasting Notes

Maybe this isn't the wine to mature for a long time (the characterictic muscat aromas oxidize quickly), but this has a breathtaking combination of muscat and grapefruit aromas, very juicy fruit, then a super-crisp finish. Drink now.

The 2016 Ried Loibenberg Gelber Muskateller Smaragd opens with a super intense and aromatic nose of perfectly ripe Muscat flavors on a fresh and coolish layer of crushed rocks. On the palate, this is a full-bodied and intense yet crisp, finessed and light-footed dry Muscat with complexity, gorgeous grip and stimulatingly salty, tensioned and aromatic length. This is a great Muscat, and it can compete with the very finest from Alsace. However, it is the coolest and freshest one I have tasted in many years. The stone fruit aromas in the aftertaste are incredibly precise and crisp and indicate perfect ripeness. Dry Muscat can hardly be any better.
