Tasting Notes

Tasted blind. Deep ruby colour. Sweet clove and cassis, together with something more exotic and riper in fruit. Soft, slightly bruised blackcurrant and bramble fruits on the palate. This sits against mouth-coating sandy tannins, which are somewhat arresting for now. Strong and chiselled, with a long finish.

Thomas Parker MW, JancisRobinson.com, October 2021

A firm, silky red with lovely tightness and depth, offering currant, blueberry and hazelnut aromas and flavors. Shows layers and beauty. Bright and vivid. Lovely length. Better in 2022 or later.

The 2017 Phélan Ségur is medium to deep garnet-purple colored with pronounced cassis, black raspberries, kirsch and violets with notions of cedar, earth and cigars. The palate is medium-bodied and elegant with great intensity, fine-grained and firm, finishing long and perfumed.

New owner, Philippe Van de Vyvere as of 2017. This is a wine that settles into the glass. It has confident, firm and rich fruit, good aromatics and structured tannins that have been well extracted. Bristling, young and a clear life ahead of it. The tannins vibrate through the palate but are very much at the front of the mouth right now, raring to go. Exceptionally good for the vintage. Retasted several times. Drinking Window 2025 - 2037

Jane Anson, Decanter.com, April 2018

Dark black cherry with purple core. Ripe, bright cassis plus a 'wild' aroma of bramble and elderberry. Firm dry texture giving a whole with sufficient mid-palate fruit. Taut and chewy/chalky but in harmony. Deeper/thicker tannins than on most wines but with plenty of dark fruit at the core. Firm and chewy but still juicy on the long finish. Has plenty of stuffing and should gain elegance with time in bottle.

A little too coarse and blunt with some green edges and little polish. This will soften in time but the fruit seems too raw and hard-edged for harmony.

This is tight and firm with a linear precision and dark fruit. Medium to full body. Bright and lightly juicy. Pretty center palate. A poised and focused young wine.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, April 2018

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Phélan Ségur gives up notes of black plums and fresh blackberries with an earthy undercurrent of damp soil, truffles and mossy bark. Medium-bodied, soft, plush and with a good core of fruit, it gives an earthy finish.
