From Jean-Christophe Meyrou, ex winemaker at La Violette and Le Gay and now making up and coming star Enclos Tourmaline, comes a unique Cotes de Castillon. Chateau le Rey "Les Rocheuses" looks to stand out from the crowd both in terms of quality, and with its Burgundy-shaped bottle. We were very impressed by the 2016 that we tasted here last year.
Lots of blackberries, blueberries and hazelnuts. Some hot stones, too. Full body and round and soft tannins. Salty and bright. No wood. Amphora. All cool.
Concentrated fruit the nose has a rich mix of black fruits the start of the palate fleshy and supple. There is mid freshness that lifts the flavour streamlined with black cherry coming through giving richness on the finish. 2024-33
By comparison the Les Argileuses, which is calm, dark and quiet, Les Rocheuses is brightly fruited, perfumed and very sensual. With much more aroma and exoticism, this is a fascinating wine with a sleek mid-palate and a very bright, crunchy finish. I prefer this aromatic explosion over the flavours in Les Argileuses in spite of the fact that Les Argileuses has more depth and back end richness.
