A very well-known Chateau throughout the world. En Primeur prices are usually reasonable and the popularity of the name ensures strong demand and increased prices when it is ready to drink. Not normally a wine to win blind tastings as it is relatively early-maturing, but always popular. The big, 105 hectare, vineyard is planted with 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. Stephane Derenoncourt now consults here. maturation is in 50% new oak.

Tasting Notes

The 2017 Talbot offers blackberry, bilberry, pencil shaving and gravelly scents on the nose. Nicely defined it misses a little intensity compared to its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannins. I admire the freshness of this Talbot, although the tarry finish just feels a little short and leaves you wanting for more. Hopefully it will put on more weight with bottle age. Drink 2023-2040.

The 2017 Talbot was picked from 18 to 4 October using manual and optical sorting, matured in 50% new oak. It has a relatively light but well-defined, floral bouquet, pressed flower filtering through that blackberry and boysenberry scents, a little clove and bay leaf lending complexity as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but firm tannin that frame the slightly savory black fruit, just a little earthiness developing towards the finish. It is a classic Talbot really, exactly what you would expect for the vintage. Drink 2020-2036.

The 2017 Talbot is medium to deep garnet-purple in color with aromas of cedar, black cherries, mulberries and warm blackcurrants with touches of earth, tree bark and herbs. The palate is medium-bodied, firm, grainy and muscular with an earthy finish. 2020 - 2033

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Talbot is a little closed on the nose with subtle plums and blackberries notes plus hints of underbrush, black olives and wood smoke. Medium-bodied with a firm frame of chewy tannins, it has lovely freshness and a savory finish.

Impressive depth of fruit and structure to this 2017 with currant, plum and light chocolate character, medium to full body and round, lightly chewy tannins. Flavorful and long. Dialed-in quality here. Drink after 2022.

The 2017 Talbot is powerful and rustic, just as it was en primeur. Black cherry, plum, grilled herbs, leather, menthol and scorched earth add to the wine's brooding, potent feel. The 2017 remains a rather rustic Saint-Julien. It will be interesting to see if the tannins soften over time. For now, there is a good bit of character, if not exactly a ton of finesse

The 2017 Talbot is powerful and dense, but also a bit rough around the edges, with burly tannins that add to that impression. It will be interesting to see if the 2017 acquire more finesse during aging. Based on the wine's persistence, there is a reasonably good chance that will happen. Intense blue/black fruit, gravel, smoke and licorice add to the wine's dark personality. Tasted two times.

Deep crimson. Fragrant with both berry and leaf of cassis. Chalky texture but still fresh and just enough fruit to give a lively finish. Could do with a little more flesh in the middle but it is nicely scented.

It was good to see that our old friend Jean-Michel Laporte (formerly of Chateau La Conseillante) has recently taken charge at Talbot. The 2017 is 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. No frost issues for the grand vin. Bright and fresh in aroma, there are notes of plums, cherries and a little fresh coffee. The palate is compact and fresh, with crunchy cherries and plums. The acidity is quite brisk and narrows the palate slighty, exacerbating the firm and unyielding tannins. This is not a charmer, but a classically proportioned claret.

Talbot has produced an elegant, fresh and carefully structured 2017. This has plenty of finesse and rich black fruit flavours with some floral notes and cedar. It shows great St-Julien balance, but again just lacks a little of the impact that has been evident at this property over recent vintages.

The powerful, singular, graphite theme here is very enjoyable and the fruit is plush and focussed and it looks well-made and also smooth and long. With a polished feel throughout this is a proud Talbot and it is going to open up very slowly to reveal a rather ravishing creature. The tannins and acidity are both judged nicely and this will provide both early drinking as well as mid-term pleasure.
