Tasting Notes

La Massa and proprietor Giampaolo Motta move from strength to strength with the 2014 Giorgio Primo, a vivid, powerful wine that exudes class. Dark red plum, lavender and spice are all given extra energy by the supporting tannins. Hints of graphite, smoke, herbs and crushed rocks infuse the chiseled, mineral-driven finish. In 2014, Giorgio Primo is a knockout. That's all there is to it.

A great nose off the bat with blackcurrant and blackberry as well as black olives and truffles. Full body, powerful and rich. Chewy yet polished tannins and a bright acidity. Drink in 2021.

This is another one of those special wines that I would not have pegged to the gray and soggy 2014 growing season. The 2014 Giorgio Primo is anything but introverted or shy. Indeed, the wine opens to spectacular intensity with a super dark and impenetrable appearance. That inky dark consistency segues to black pepper, spice, leather and blackberry preserves. The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot, and the wine is aged in barrique (of which 80% is new) for 18 months. This is a great effort. Only 7,000 bottles were produced.
