Tasting Notes

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Melbury is profoundly scented of crushed plums, black cherries and cassis with hints of dark chocolate, black pepper, black soil and licorice plus a hint of iron ore. Full-bodied, rich and earthy in the mouth, it has a lovely fine-grained but firm backbone with plenty of freshness, finishing long and peppery.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate (233), October 2017

As for the single-vineyard wines, the seven-acre hillside vineyard called Melbury is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon (as are all its siblings). The wine is aged for a minimum of two years in mostly new oak, then bottled unfiltered. From this property which overlooks Lake Hennessey, the 2014 Melbury displays beautiful blueberry and dark raspberry fruit, an opaque blue/purple color, and the endearing suppleness and lushness that are key characteristics of this vintage. It has fabulous fruit on the attack and mid-palate and a long, supple finish. This sexy wine should drink well for 20-25 years.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (227), October 2016

The 2014 Melbury comes from a site just north of Lake Hennessey that consists of unique, oceanic and clay soils. It’s a pretty, perfumed, seamless beauty offering loads of black cherry and cassis fruit, hints of chocolate and earth, medium to full-bodied richness, no hard edges, and beautiful tannin. Drink it over the coming 15-20 years.
