Peter Kwok from Hong Kong recently purchased Bellefont-Belcier to add to his rapidly growing portfolio of right bank properties - including Enclos Tourmaline and La Tour Saint Christophe. The property is situated between Château Larcis Ducasse and Tertre Roteboeuf on the south-facing slopes and plateau of Saint Emilion.

The wine-maker here is now Jean-Christophe Meyrou (formerly of Le Gay and La Violette) and his team managed the 2017 harvest, taking control of the vineyard in May 2017.

Tasting Notes

Dark fruit with chocolate and a hint of coffee on the nose. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a juicy finish. The toasted oak is a little predominant now, but this is going to come together beautifully. Excellent length, A blend of 70% merlot, 25% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon. Try after 2022.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Bellefont Belcier wears its cedary oak at the forefront at this stage, giving way to scents of baked blackberries, black cherries and mulberries plus wafts of Christmas cake and tobacco. Medium-bodied, the palate is firmly textured with grainy tannins and has a great core of muscular fruit, finishing with a lovely herbal lift. A blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine was aged for 20 months in French oak, 40% new. 2021 - 2033

This has impact and weight, and a good overall structure. It hasn't reached the heights of recent years, being more austere on this occasion, but is still extremely accomplished. There's an elegance to the carefully extracted, bright fruit.

Very dark with black core. Scented pure black fruit. Rather severe and intense on the palate, like essence of blackcurrant. Smooth texture and fresh but just a little bitter on the finish.

The nose has sweet fruit the palate ripe black fruits the mid richness underpinned by firm but fine tannins. Freshness at the back quite tight with the fresh fruits giving a lighter firmer feel to the finish. 2025-35

A new purchase for Vignobles K, they bought the property at the end of last year but they were managing the vineyards much earlier in the year and through the harvest time, too. Much more resonance and very much more intense fruit here, this is a wine with masses of energy and depth and it is a stellar inaugural vintage for Peter Kwok and his team. Every element of a great wine is here with superb, stylish fruit, grainy tannins, balanced oak and vital acidity. It is a very noble creation.

The 2017 Bellefont Belcier is deep garnet-purple colored and scented of baked plums and dried mulberries with touches of fragrant earth and underbrush. Medium-bodied, soft and plush, it has plenty of fruit and a gorgeous texture, finishing long. The tentative blend is 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
