Tasting Notes

The 2017 Saint-Véran Lieu (Inter)dit is excellent, wafting from the glass with notes of hazelnut cream, ripe citrus fruit, confit lemon and honeysuckle. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and tangy, with a bright line of acidity to balance its deep core of fruit and a long, precise finish. This will be well worth seeking out and comes warmly recommended. Drink 2018-2026.

As in previous years, this wine comes mainly from the "Côte Rôtie" vineyard in Davayé. Verget have been forbidden to use the name of the vineyard on the label. Jean-Marie Guffens tells us that this wine has exceptional density yet with great tension and minerality. It was produced only from free run juice and vinified in barrel with 25% new oak. It was aged for a further 7 months with regular batonnage. Once again this is a highlight of the tasting, with great intensity of stone fruits and a hint of white pepper and toast on the nose. The palate is dense and rich, with peaches and cream giving great generosity before layers of spicy complexity and the cut of vibrant acidity give a weightless intensity and harmony to the wine. Very long, pure and balanced on the finish.
