Pouilly Fuisse Premier Jus des Hauts de Vignes, Domaine Guffens-Heynen 2017

Tasting Notes

Tasted from bottle, Guffens's 2017 Pouilly-Fuissé Premiers Jus des Hautes des Vignes is a magical wine in the making, opening in the glass with scents of pear, lemon oil, confit citrus, mandarin and buttered yellow apples. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and powerful, with immense concentration and chewy structuring extract, underpinned by incisive acids and concluding with a prodigiously long finish. Surpassing even its thrilling showing from barrel, it rivals the Premier Jus des Croux for the title of the Mâconnais wine of the vintage. Given its concentrated, structured profile, I suspect it will shut down, so readers who purchase it should plan on exercising a little patience.

Rich and ripe the nose has depth the palate a concentrated mix of ripe greengage and honeydew melon. Chalky and mineral in the mineral in the middle a backbone of freshness and although there is depth of fruit at the back it finishes lean flinty racy freshness. 2019-25

The 2017 Pouilly-Fuissé Premiers Jus des Hautes des Vignes is especially promising, offering up notes of ripe citrus, green apples, spring flowers and mandarin oil. On the palate, it's full-bodied, bright but textural, with incisive acids and chalky grip on the finish. It's quite reserved in this extroverted vintage.
