Cornas Gore, Matthieu Barret - Domaine du Coulet 2011

Tasting Notes

Ogre is the name for the cuvée Gore, but when it's produced in classic styles of vintage rather than powerful ones. It's fermented then aged for 24 months in large concrete eggs, with no winemaking additions. Deeply smoky, there are some reductive notes on the nose. In the mouth it's full-bodied still, with blueberry, star anise and incense, and tight tannins. The reductive elements to the aromatic profile follow through to the palate slightly, which is a pity, but this is a small misstep in what is otherwise a delicious and highly characterful wine. Dark crimson. Very rich and bloody with much more zest than the Billes Noires. Dry on the end but some transparency. 2015-2025
