CDP Barbe-Rac, Maison M. Chapoutier 2017

Tasting Notes

The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Barbe Rac is brilliant and up there with some of the finest vintages to date of this cuvée. Based all on Grenache from a single lieu-dit in the southwest of the appellation called the Barbe d'Asne and brought up in concrete tanks, it offers up a gorgeous nose of kirsch liqueur, ground pepper, garrigue, and graphite. Deep, rich, and powerful on the palate, with tons of sweet fruit, it needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will keep for two decades or more.

Exceptionally low yields in the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac contribute to this wine's almost black hue. It's crazy-concentrated, full-bodied and rich but boasts incredible floral aromas of roses and violets, ripe cherry and stone fruit flavors and exotic spice notes. This looks really special. Drink Date 2022 - 2040

Cask sample. 7 hl/ha. 100% Grenache.
Ripe redcurrant and raspberry with medicinal, leathery notes for complexity. Streets ahead of their Croix de Bois with more immediate complexity and intensity. Richly layered but with already accessible structure. Utterly lush.
