Tasting Notes

A sleeping giant in which all the power is almost invisible beneath the totally silky surface. But if you are patient, the depth and originality of this wine will make themselves felt. Better from 2019. Made from biodynamically grown grapes.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, May 2018

Quite a deep colour at this young stage, in part due ot the later picking. The fruit profile is exotic for riesling, with some honeyed, cider apple notes. The palate is richly textured, with a bruised apple note at the core at this stage. The palate is brisk with acidity that cuts through the texture. The touch of residual sugar (8g/l) adds to the richness and weight, and adds the slightest hint of sweetness.

Farr Vintners, Farr Tasting, June 2018

A flinty, welcome cloud of reduction is still apparent on the nose, but the palate shows juicy fruit. Ripe, juicy red apple has a lime and lemon tang on a slender but concentrated body that also suggests wet stone. This wine takes time to open up but the echoing length of its lemony, stony notions is a promise for the future. The finish is appetizing and dry. Drink 2020–2035.

Anne Krebiehl MW, Wine Enthusiast, January 2018

From 43-year-old vines on deep, calcareous marl soils just below the Hengst Grand Cru, the 2016 Wintzenheim Riesling Clos Häuserer offers a deep, elegant, still discreetly aromatic but spicy-mineral nose with a rather shy, coolish, pretty distinctive character. It is a full-bodied, concentrated and powerful yet elegant Riesling with fine tannins and delicate, well-integrated acidity. The finish is long and compact but still a bit astringent. The Clos Häuserer will develop slowly with bottle aging, so stay patient! Tasted at the domaine in June 2018. 2021 - 2036
