Bonnes Mares, Domaine Georges & Christophe Roumier 2004

Tasting Notes

This is maturing into a really lovely wine as there is some evident evolution to the still pretty mix of violet, red and black fruits, earth, herb and game-suffused nose that gives way to textured, sappy, firm and intense flavors that are complex, long and utterly delicious though the finish does reflect a discreet note of acid tang. For my taste this still needs a few more years of cellar time but if given sufficient air in a decanter, the '04 BM could be enjoyed now. Note that this is not an especially big wine by the typical standards of the Roumier Bonnes Mares but it largely avoids the greenness prevalent in some examples of the '04 vintage.

Intense and brooding, this is full of earth, cherry, mineral and animal notes. The tannins are assertive, yet there's plenty of fruit and body to absorb them. Nice, chewy finish. Best from 2009 through 2025.

Intense and brooding, this red offers complexity and power in an understated way. Blackberry, mineral and tobacco flavors meld with lively structure and fine-grained tannins. Picks up a violet theme on the long finish. Best from 2009 through 2025.

This also displays noticeable wood spice with a potent mix of violet, red and black fruits, earth aromas and hints of game that give way to textured, sappy, firm and intense flavors that are both serious and more obviously structured. This will require time to come around though there is reasonably good phenolic ripeness and, in the context of the vintage, solid finishing power and pop.
