Alexander Stodden's 2015 (Recher) Herrenberg Spätburgunder GG (from 30- to 50-year-old vines) has a medium garnet-red color and opens with highly delicate but intense red fruit aromas intermixed with spicy slate aromas. It is pretty reductive right now and displays a bit of burnt rubber flavor but the fruit is pure, intense, fresh, spicy and perfectly ripe. Full-bodied, lush and silky, with great finesse and elegance, this is a gorgeous Pinot Noir from slate: firm, intense, ripe and fresh, with fine tannins, highly delicate acidity and lovey floral flavors on the long, intense finish. Gosh, this is gorgeous! A mix of depth, concentration, tension and complexity. Probably the finest Pinot Noir GG from the Ahr and one of the finest Pinots Noirs I tasted at the GG tasting in Wiesbaden in August 2017.
Pale lightly cloudy ruby – looks quite evolved. Some strong mushroom-stew element. Good, precise acidity makes this a special, umami-informed wine. Really like a mushroom consommé. Transparent and not at all forced. Long and really rather delicate. Warm and broad yet the overall impression is of lifted richness.
