Tasting Notes

The 2018 Mâcon-Pierreclos Tri de Chavigne is showing brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with notes of citrus oil, crisp Anjou pear, blanched almonds, white flowers and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's searingly intense, with an elegantly textural attack and a racy spine of acidity. Still tightly wound after its recent bottling, this has a long and glorious future ahead of it. This cuvée was produced from three picks—spread over the course of 12 days—in Guffens's higher-altitude holdings in Le Chavigne, and it was raised in barrels, some 30% of which were new. Drink 2025-2045.

Bright pale lemon in colour. Sappy, honeyed and rich on the nose, full of ripe, fleshy stone fruits. The palate is spicy and expansive, with creamy, exotic fruit and a generous oily texture. Bright acid cuts through the richness and reveals finely etched peach and poached pear that is layered with sweet, toasted spices. Great length with a driven, spicy finish. Drink now, or over the next 10 years.

Farr Vintners, Farr Tasting, March 2020

The 2018 Mâcon-Pierreclos Tri de Chavigne is the fruit of three successive passages through the vines over the course of a single week, and it's showing very well, displaying aromas of buttered orchard fruits and citrus oil. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with terrific cut and a long, lip-smacking finish. Guffens explained that yields for this cuvée were in the region of 40-45 hectoliters per hectare, any vines that gave more being relegated to the "En Crazy."
