Tasting Notes

Low in volume this year, with the same 100% old oak fermentation and maturation as the other wines, this Coddington is a fantastic effort, bringing the quality closer to Mate's Vineyard and Hunting Hill than it has ever been before. There is a riper, richer quality to the fruit on the nose here, with hints of white peach and ripe tone fruits. There is still a hint of smokiness here from the second-fill barrels as well as the match-stick reduction. The palate has good density but is compact, with the fleshy peaches well defined and pure. Waves of acidity add freshness and a touch of citrus, lifting a long and complex finish with more than a hint of savoury smokiness that lingers in the background. Very well made this year.

Farr Vintners, Farr Tasting, September 2019

Tighter and more linear than usual, the 2018 Coddington Chardonnay boasts scents of pencil shavings set against a backdrop of grapefruit and pineapple. It's medium-bodied, crisp and focused, with a bright beam of acid and hints of citrus pith on the finish. Drink 2020-2030.

This has very attractive richness and complexity. Fresh, nectarine and peach aromas and flavors are delivered in such energetically textural and powerful style. Impressive length and focus. Drink now. Screw cap.
