Chambertin, Domaine Armand Rousseau 2003

Tasting Notes

Somewhat curiously given the natural coolness of Chambertin, this seems noticeably riper than the '03 Clos de Bèze (see herein) with notes of mocha, spice, earth and markedly ripe black currant aromas. There is excellent size, weight, concentration and power to the big-bodied and extract-rich flavors that coat the mouth before culminating in a lightly mineral-inflected, velvety and as the nose suggests, mocha-tinged finish. This is more 2003 in basic character than the Bèze though as is usually the case, it's more structured as well though with 45 minutes in a decanter, this too could be drunk now with pleasure. That said, I would be inclined to give this at least 6 to 10 more years first though please be aware that this will be capable of holding for decades. Drink 2023+

A supple red, this exudes cinnamon, plum and cocoa aromas augmented by flavors of licorice and mineral, with a long, lively finish. Balanced, yet needs time to integrate the dense tannins. Will be terrific in about 10 years. Best from 2012 through 2030.

A deeply pitched yet wonderfully elegant nose of black pinot fruit, game even slightly animale and subtle underbrush notes complement perfectly balanced, pure and powerful flavors that pack plenty of punch and superb length. This is a big if not massive wine with a dusty, lingering finish of real style and grace. At the moment, this is actually more refined than the Bèze, which is usually not the case at this early stage. This should age well for years and it will require at least a decade to really begin strutting its stuff.
