Mazis Chambertin, Domaine Dugat-Py 2018

Tasting Notes

A restrained, fresh and beautifully layered nose displays notes of herbal tea to the red cherry liqueur, earth, violet and Asian-style tea. The sleekly muscular and agreeably intense imposingly-scaled flavors also brim with dry extract that helps to buffer the exceptionally firm tannic spine on the powerful, balanced and strikingly long finish. This is a huge Mazis that is breathtakingly good.

From three small plots, the oldest 90+ years old, planted with the rows 80cm apart (14,000 vines per hectare) so always ploughed by horse. 3 new barrels out of 4. Loïc thinks that this wine is always difficult to taste young. Dense purple black with a plummy richness. Such a huge mouthful, has totally covered the acidity and most of the tannins. Fractionally more red than black fruit though fully ripe. Long gracious finish. Long enough, does it quite have the grip at the back for the 5th star? I might be being ungenerous here. Tasted: November 2019
