Tasting Notes

Maria Gomes, Bical, Cerceal. 50- to 80-year-old vines. Fruit from Dirk Niepoort’s Quinta de Baixo estate. Intense, densely peachy and mineral nose. Very marked, and very attractive acidity. Pungent and yet honeyed at the same time. Great combination of richness and tension. 2019 – 2023

Pale lemon-gold in the glass, with a complex nose of honey, heather and preserved lemons – intense and enticing. The palate is lithe and zippy with acid, offering real cut and freshness through a ripe core of peach and honeyed lemons. This wine feels solar but there is such bite and salinity that cuts through the ripeness. Cool and pure on the finish. Perfect summer drinking, to be enjoyed over the next 18 months.

Farr Vintners, Farr Tasting, June 2020

A blend of 50- to 80-year-old Maria Gomes, Bical and Cercial, made by Dirk Niepoort in a joint venture with Ben Henshaw of Indigo Wine.
Distinctive but light cedary aroma that I associate with Portuguese wines with some bottle age. This is pure, precise and crisp with the flavours starting to broaden to give a note of wild-thyme honey, though the wine is bone dry. Intense, complex and still so fresh and vibrant, with a good deal more weight than you might expect with such modest alcohol and yet no heaviness. Is it totally bone dry? (I asked Dirk Niepoort, who confirmed 4 g/l residual sugar, and I can just feel it on the finish in a flavour of lime pastille.) (JH)
