Tasting Notes

Thank goodness this estate’s new consultant, Stephane Derenoncourt, has toned down what was often too much new oak. He also appears to have built in more density. The 2005 is a beautifully exuberant, sexy wine displaying copious black cherry, toasty oak, raspberry, and vanillin notes. Pure, rich, medium to full-bodied, and luscious, patience will not be required for this beauty as it can be consumed now and over the next 12-15 years

Heady, animal, gamey notes. Sweet, burnt notes - very exaggerated and in the modern idiom but there is enough freshness. A definite style - not for me - pretty brutal oak tannins. Drink 2013-19

Medium red. Superripe aromas of maraschino cherry and smoke. At once sweet and firm, with flavors of cherry, licorice and minerals. A bit youthfully medicinal, and very successful for this property.

Wine guru Stephane Derenoncourt appears to have tamed some of the blatant oakiness often found in young vintages of Ferrand-Lartigue. The result is a denser, richer, more balanced effort possessing medium to full body as well as loads of exuberant black raspberry and cherry fruit intermixed with pain grille and spice. Soft tannin along with abundant richness suggest this beautifully pure, long 2005 should be consumed during its first 12-15 years of life.

This sweet, fruity, oaky, modern-styled St.-Emilion possesses good density, soft acidity, ripe tannin, and a fleshy, up-front personality. Enjoy it over the next 7-8 years.
