Grape VarietyMerlot/Cabernet Sauvignon

Often close in quality to the same owner's top Saint Emilion, Le Tertre Rôteboeuf. This Côtes de Bourg is head and shoulders the best wine of the appellation and very much a wine for those "in the know". A right bank wine, yet only 4 or 5 kilometres from Château Margaux as the crow flies. This vineyard is a south facing slope with well ventilated vines. The 20% of Cabernet Sauvignon vines here are over 50 years old. Matured in 100% new oak.

Tasting Notes

Broad and concentrated, the 2020 Roc de Cambes unwinds in the glass with aromas of cassis, plums, wood smoke, violets and espresso roast. Medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a fleshy core of fruit and powdery structuring tannins, this is the most muscular wine in Mitjaville's cellar.

William Kelley, Wine Advocate, April 2023

Unlike almost any other property in Bordeaux, the fruit here was harvested in October, giving vintage-defying ripeness and texture. Deep ruby in colour. The nose is boisterous and powerful, with exotic fruit, incense and leather all coming through. The palate follows, dense and concentrated with cassis and kirsch. This spherical and explosive wine finds a ripeness few managed in 2020 without risking over-extraction. Spicy and rich through to an intense and long finish.

Farr Vintners, Farr Tasting, May 2021

85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Cask sample.
Ripe and concentrated but less decadent than the other wines in the Mitjavile stable. More dark fruit and innate freshness as well as a form that is linear rather than spherical. Touch of toasted oak and tannins that have a crunchy, mineral feel. (JL)
