Griotte Chambertin, Domaine Claude Dugat 2019

Tasting Notes

**Note: from a .16 ha parcel of 45+ year old vines**
The 2019 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru is a magical bottle in the making, wafting from the glass with complex aromas of cherries, peonies, bergamot, coniferous forest floor and dark chocolate. Full-bodied, layered and complete, it's suave and satiny, with a deep, strikingly intense core of fruit framed by lively acids and ultra-refined tannins. It is another terrific rendition of a cuvée that's regularly—and, to my palate, increasingly—one of the Côte de Nuits's greatest wines.

A slightly fresher and not quite as ripe nose offers up pretty aromas of various red berries, and in particular currant and cherry, along with hints of earth and a plethora of spice elements. There is a wonderfully cool and classy presence to the middle weight plus flavors that possess a bracing salinity on the dusty, serious and strikingly long finale. Like the Lavaut St. Jacques, the tannins are quite fine-grained which contributes to the overall sense of balance and harmony. Fine-grained tannins or not though, this is quite firmly structured and is going to require extended patience if you wish to enjoy it at its peak.
