The red 2019 Unculín wants to be light and fresh through adding some 10% white grapes and 5% Alicante Bouschet to the Mencía, all from old vines, with 13.3% alcohol and good acidity. It fermented with 10% to 20% full clusters and the rest uncrushed grapes in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in stainless steel and oak foudres for six months. It's aromatic, floral, elegant, clean and fruit-driven, with a medium-bodied palate and round tannins. It's a great introduction to the reds form Bierzo. 40,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2020. Drink 2022-2025.
Bright ruby colour. Despite the pricepoint this is a serious and tight wine that deserves decanting if approaching soon. The aromas are slightly reductive for now, bringing layers of violets, pepper, dried herbs and crisp red cherries with air. The palate reveals succulent red berry fruit and is distinctly floral. Chalky in structure with a stony pencil shaving savoury edge, this is a very complex wine for the price point. Long and fleshing out on the finish, there is a real sign of potential here. Give this 6-12 months before approaching, and consider decanting for at least an hour to reveal the aromatic potential.
