CDP Vieilles Vignes, La Milliere Chateau 2007

Tasting Notes

The beautiful 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (from 80- to 100-year-old vines) is a blend of 60% Grenache and the rest equal parts Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault, and Counoise aged in concrete tanks and old wood foudres. An effusively fruity, exuberant effort, it reveals plenty of juicy black currants and black cherries intermixed with lavender, licorice, incense, and forest floor. Full-bodied, dense, and seductive with silky tannins and a long, lush, opulent finish, it is impossible to resist at present, and should continue to evolve for 10-12+ years.

Glowing ruby. Hidden, but intriguing nose. Solid and tarry. Very sweet start and then molten black cherries. Then it tightens itself up for the finish, but all is very interesting and promising. Good balance and a wine with a beginning, middle and end.

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes reveals gorgeous aromas of spring flowers, crushed black cherries, ink, lavender, and spice. The wine is dense ruby/purple-hued, deep, and full-bodied with terrific concentration, a layered texture, and a stunningly long finish. It should drink beautifully young, yet age for 15 or more years.
