Blockbuster Châteauneuf - rich and thick yet staying loyal to local customs with its traditional emphasis on plu, leather, wet earth, cedar , tobacco, coffee and mineral. A wine that could come from nowhere else in the world - and unhindered by some modernistic oak treatment. Fabulously authentic stuff here.

The limited production Cuvee Vieilles Vignes (70% Grenache and 30% Syrah and Mourvedre) was rocking when I tasted it. The 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes boasts an opaque ruby/purple color in addition to a primary but firm, classic, structured style with immense concentration, and plenty of power and tannin. With great purity, a formidable personality, tremendous staying power, and a finish that lasts for nearly a minute, it will definitely require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2022.
