CDP Vieilles Vignes, Domaine de la Janasse 2006

Tasting Notes

The Chaupin is slightly eclipsed by the profound quality of the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes. Inky/blue/purple, with massive aromatics, an unctuous texture, and superb length on the palate, it is enormously endowed for a 2006. Very pure for a 2006, with sweet tannins as well as amazing length, it will benefit from several years of cellaring, and drink well for 20-25 years.

Really juicy and vivid, with blueberry, boysenberry and raspberry fruit laced with sweet spice, tobacco and fruitcake notes. The long, racy finish has a great refreshing edge and solid, buried grip. Drink now through 2028.

The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (88% Grenache, 7% Mourvedre, and 5% Syrah, with only 5,000 bottles produced) is one of the vintage’s most profound wines. Inky ruby/purple to the rim, with a nose of incense, melted licorice, asphalt, blackberry, and blueberry with a hint of pain grille, the wine is exceptionally powerful, rich, concentrated, and harmonious, with high but sweet tannins, low acidity, and a spectacular finish of close to 50+ seconds. It is much more approachable than the 2005, but give it 4-5 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 25 years.
