Gevrey Chambertin Champonnets, Heresztyn-Mazzini 2016

Tasting Notes

This is even more overtly sauvage in character with its ripe yet wonderfully fresh aromas of dark raspberry, warm earth and subtle floral wisps. The very rich, full-bodied and muscular flavors possess excellent power and punch while delivering impressive depth and length on the very firm but only slightly austere finale. This is going to require at least 5-ish years of cellaring first and should amply reward 10 to 12. Excellent.

There is more whole bunch (70%) in the 2016 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Champonnets, the highest used by the domaine in this growing season. Now this has a very mineral-driven bouquet, terse and linear at first, though the fruit soon comes to the surface—blackberries, briary and a hint of cassis. This is very seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well-judged acidity, quite sappy and Saint with hints of black olive and oyster shells towards the finish that carries good weight and persistence. It will need 3 or 4 years in bottle, but it will be worth the wait. Expect it to land at the top of my banded score.
