Tasting Notes

One of the more modern-styled wines from the appellation of Margaux, always with a prominent overlay of toasty new oak, espresso roast, and sweet black fruits, this wine seems more restrained and has backed off its concentration with the 2006. It is a mid-weight, elegant wine with notes of licorice and black currants as well as a hint of tobacco leaf. The wine is concentrated and obviously outstanding, but the moderate tannins in the finish suggest cellaring it for 2-3 years and drinking it over the following 15-20.

Tasted at the UGC. A dense, oak laden nose with an underlying note of green pepper. It becomes quite smoky after a while. The palate is tannic, a little astringent and lacking cohesion. Grippy tannins but it lacks some fruit at the centre and freshness on the finish. So-so. Tasted April 2007.

Sweet and round, quite explosive fruit but quite delicate. Difficult wine to judge. Is there enough intensity here for the very severe dry tannins? I suspect not for the moment - though I realise I am not giving it the benefit of the doubt. Extremely dry finish, though there is some nice fruit.

Deep red-ruby. Wild nose combines currant, blackberry, coffee, mocha, cedary oak and a light weedy quality. Lush and rather exotic in the mouth, with the liqueur-like quality carrying through. Not at all overly sweet but a distinctly supple and fine-grained style of 2006. Finishes with very ripe tannins and lovely persistence. Accessible already but with the stuffing to age.

A strong effort for Lascombes, the 2006 is a blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot. The harvest lasted nearly a month, from September 21 through October 19, and under the new ownership (which recently put this property up for sale), a severe triage was done prior to fermentation. The 2006 exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with aromas of licorice, candied black cherries, blackberries, smoke, and barbecue spices. Surprisingly opulent, soft, and racy, but not as profoundly concentrated or dense as the 2005, this beautifully perfumed, silky-textured Margaux is ideal for drinking over the next 12-15 years.

Good deep red-ruby. Perfumed aromas and flavors of currant, mocha and espresso. Sweet, lush and nicely concentrated, with well-integrated acidity giving shape to the wine's broad flavors, which spread out impressively on the back end. The ripe tannins reach the incisors. A strong showing today.
