En Primeur Latest NewsWednesday, 20th May 2009Bordeaux 2008 En Primeur ROUND-UPWe have seen a very eventful en primeur campaign this year. In March we heard rumours that Chateaux would be increasing their prices because quality was clearly up on 2007 and quantities produced were significantly down. Farr Vintners was one of the strongest voices in insisting that, regardless of quality, prices had to be reduced and we even delayed our tasting of the wines until we had a commitment that this would happen. The campaign opened with a very important 40% price decrease from Angelus which was followed by even larger reductions from the First Growths led by Chateau Latour. The biggest event in the campaign, however, turned out to be the publication of Robert Parker's tasting notes in "The Wine Advocate". Whilst many of us thought that 2008 was a good to very good vintage with a handful of outstanding wines, Mr Parker produced a string of rave reviews and compared it, in many instances, to 2005. With the backing of the "Emperor of Wine" behind it, the vintage has really taken off and we have seen a very successful en primeur campaign. The good news is that, despite the high scores, virtually every single Chateau continued the trend of reducing their release prices. We now offer a round-up of the availability of the most important Chateaux: 1. The First Growths We were able to supply last year's buyers and many "pre-orders" at opening prices, but we now have some small availabities of subsequent "tranches" at market prices: Lafite - 10 cases available at £3500 Latour - 5 cases available at £2700 Mouton - 1 case available at £1900 Margaux - 1 x 6 bottle case available at £2100 per dozen Haut Brion - 2 cases available at £2100 Cheval Blanc - please consult us for a special price. Ausone - Approximately half of last year's volume has been released on the 1st tranche so we await the 2nd tranche. More news soon. 2. Not Yet Released We await only these wines but we will have less quantity than we have pre-orders: Lafleur Le Pin Petrus 3. The Wines of the Vintage We still have availability of these outstanding wines: L'Eglise Clinet £900 Cos d'Estournel £775 Pontet Canet £560 Pichon Lalande £540 Pichon Baron £520 4. Best Value Wines of the Vintage We still have availability of these wines which represent great value for money: Fonbel - £120 (great value from Ausone's Alain Vauthier) Aiguilhe - £145 (from the owner of La Mondotte and Canon la Gaffeliere and not far off the quality of those wines) Les Cruzelles - £150 (best ever wine from this Chateau. Made by Denis Durantou of L'Eglise Clinet) Winemakers' Collection #4 - £170 (a fascinating wine from Stephane Derenoncourt) Moulin Saint Georges - £245 (from the slopes just below Ausone and briliantly made by Alain Vauthier) Langoa Barton - £250 (classic classed growth Saint Julien) Grand Puy Lacoste - £280 (serious Pauillac at a very fair price) Domaine de Chevalier - £285 (close to the 2005 in quality. Second growth quality and a very reasonable price. Highly recommended) Duhart Milon - £340 (from the same owners as Lafite. Better than Carruades. One of the best Duharts ever) Pavie Macquin - £360 (one third the price of Pavie and maybe better?) Lynch Bages - £390 (Robert Parker says better than the 2005!? £100 cheaper than any other vintage of Lynch Bages.) 5. Sold Out These wines are now sold out: Angelus Calon Segur Clinet L'Evangile Le Gay Tertre Roteboeuf La Violette Haut Brion Blanc 6.
