Often close in quality to the same owner's top Saint Emilion, Le Tertre Rôteboeuf. This Côtes de Bourg is head and shoulders the best wine of the appellation and very much a wine for those "in the know". A right bank wine, yet only 4 or 5 kilometres from Château Margaux as the crow flies. This vineyard is a south facing slope with well ventilated vines. The 20% of Cabernet Sauvignon vines here are over 50 years old. Matured in 100% new oak.
The 2021 Roc de Cambes exhibits aromas of dark berries, orange zest, espresso roast, smoked meats and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and lively palate that's turned out to be, as I observed from barrel, an especially elegant rendition of this superb clay-limestone terroir in the Côtes de Bourg. Drink Date: 2025 - 2041
The 2021 Roc de Cambes has another quite Burgundy-like bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit, very well defined, perfumed and pure. The caressing palate has good weight, a uncommon sense of rondeur for a 2021, and pliant, filigreed tannins on the finish. I think the 2021 vintage really suits the Roc de Cambes. A wonderful wine.
80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep ruby colour in the glass. The sweetness of the Radoux blend oak is evident on the nose but the opulent, ripe, steeped cherry fruit has more than enough weight to balance this out. Chocolate, liquorice and fennel seeds all come through. The palate is ample, smoky and rich, with very ripe tannins and still the refreshing acidity of the vintage. This succulent wine has great drive thanks to the vintage. This is an excellent Roc de Cambes, with the refreshing nature of the vintage only amplifying the drinkability of the wine. As is often the case, a difficult vintage has brought the best out of Mitjavile.
The 2021 Roc de Cambes is medium to deep garnet-purple colored. It features a very fragrant nose of redcurrant jelly, raspberry preserves, and lavender with hints of tilled soil, charcoal, and fallen leaves. Medium-bodied, the palate has a plush texture and plenty of earth-laced red fruit flavors, finishing with great length and harmony.
2027-2035
80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Cask sample.
Open and expressive. Dark fruit and toasted notes but with a chalky lift. Gourmand fruit on the palate but chalky tannins again in behind. Seductive house style but in a minor key. (JL)

The 2021 Roc de Cambes is shaping up beautifully, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet berries, wild plums, rich cassis, pipe tobacco and espresso roast. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and textural, it's a rich, sensual wine with an elegantly muscular profile, its structuring tannins largely concealed by succulent fruit. Seamless and penetrating, it's an especially elegant rendition of this superb clay-limestone terroir in the Côtes de Bourg.
