Tasting Notes

Somewhat similar to the 1990, but slightly more structured, with more noticeable tannin and a meatier style, this is still a very perfumed, exotic, expansive, sensationally concentrated wine that should age effortlessly for another 10-15 years. In that sense, it might actually outlast the 1990, but what a pair these two wines make. The wine has a dark garnet/ruby color and fabulous aromatics of black raspberries, kirsch, licorice, and copious amounts of toasted new oak. Relatively full-bodied for a La Conseillante, with great purity, sweet tannin, but noticeable structure and muscle, this is a relatively large-scaled La Conseillante that has always been one of the top wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: Now-2020. Last tasted, 12/02.

Having tasted the 1989 Château La Conseillante on more than a dozen occasions, I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that it is one of my favourite Pomerols from the vintage. Although on its day, the 1989 Clinet can outplay La Conseillante, the fact of the matter is that the latter is the more consistent Pomerol. Here, it has that beguiling bouquet of melted black fruit, sage, undergrowth and hints of bacon fat, like a wagging finger inviting you inside. The palate is smooth and harmonious, a mixture of red and black fruit that seem to revel on the precocity of the growing season, even though it was now 27 years ago. It is a voluminous, mouth-filling Pomerol, but not extravagant, flamboyant for sure and yet never betraying its roots. It's just a wonderful La Conseillante, a thoroughbred Pomerol that puts a smile on your face. Drink: 2016 - 2030.

Wow. Solid and packed with fruit. I love the aromatic richness of the wine with crushed berries and fresh flowers. And the palate is full, rich and fresh. Very long. Gorgeous. Give it another five years. But so good already.

Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book (3), November 1998

have always thought the 1989 to be the equal of the 1990, although that was not confirmed in this particular tasting. The 1989 revealed a tighter, more backward, restrained style, without the sweet, jammy, spicy, black-cherry/raspberry component that is so pronounced in the 1990. The asterisk beside the 1989's score refers to the two bottles of the 1989 I consumed subsequent to the tasting. I did not think the wine showed as well as it could have in the fall tasting, and my subsequent tasting reinforced that view. This is a mid-ninety point La Conseillante that is very much in the style of the 1990. In comparing the two vintages, the 1989 has slightly more noticeable tannin and structure, but it is a perfumed, exotic, sweet, expansive, yummy wine that is hard to resist. The 1989 and 1990 wines represent La Conseillante's quintessential smooth as silk style, which often leads consumers to believe the wines will not last. I remember feeling the same way about the 1982 (which never tasted as stunning as either the 1989 or 1990). That wine continues to get better and better. One of the unexplainable facts of Bordeaux wine drinking is that even the softer, delicious, up-front wines can age impeccably when well-stored. Owners of the 1989 and 1990 La Conseillantes should not hesitate to enjoy them now, as well as over the next 20 years.

I have tasted the 1989 La Conseillante countless times and it always delivers. Here it has retained that sumptuous bouquet, perhaps a little more "melted" now with sappy black fruit, sous-bois, just a touch of bacon fat and sage. The palate is medium-bodied but full of sinew even after a couple of decades. There are layers of succulent black fruit interlaced with chestnut and cured meats, the finish gently fanning out to make sure you are completely satisfied. Superb - and a long life ahead. Tasted December 2013.

An outstanding wine of subtle spice, cherry and herb aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, with ripe fruit and soft tannins. Long, chocolate and spice aftertaste.--1989 Bordeaux horizontal. Best from 2000 through 2006.
