In flight one of the reds, we were surprised (it was a blind tasting) that the 1998 Alion nearly blew away the 1996 Vega Sicilia Valbuena.
Bright medium ruby. Sexy aromas of cassis, black raspberry, mocha, cocoa powder, game and minerals. Densely packed but juicy; a very stylish wine with a lovely light touch thanks to perfectly integrated acidity. Still quite penetrating and youthfully unevolved. Finishes very long and subtle, with terrific grip. A strong effort. 91(+?)
