Tasting Notes

A dark, almost primordial style of Pomerol, the 2005 Providence has notes of new saddle leather, licorice, truffle, loamy soil, forest floor and earth, with plenty of rich blackcurrant and black cherry fruit behind all of these nuances. It is a big, masculine, full-bodied, intense Pomerol to cellar for another 4-5 years, and drink over the following two decades. Drink 2019 - 2040.

The Providence 2005 is very sweet and generous on the nose with dark cherries, blueberry and a touch of fresh prune. It becomes more and more floral in the glass, though never quite achieves the precision of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with quite an oaky entry that needs more integration. There is plenty of depth here, moderate complexity and hints of coffee emerging towards the finish. It is just a little ostentatious, which seems little incongruous within the J-P Moueix stable. Enjoy over the next decade. 90

Tasted blind. Bright ruby. Very well-integrated nose. Pungent with some minerally notes aromatically plus sweetness and gaminess on the palate. Just a little stolid on the palate but pretty satisfying. Spicy. 13.5%

Christian Moueix's new Pomerol baby, the 2005 La Providence reveals a saturated dark ruby color, beautiful aromas of damp earth, subtle smoke, herb-infused black cherries and raspberries, and a sandy, loamy soil character. Deep, powerful tannins complement the wine's wealth of fruit and broad mouthfeel. Kudos to Moueix for taking a relatively obscure estate with a top-notch terroir to new heights of quality. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025.

Tasted single blind at Southwold. This has a more lifted, extrovert nose with good definition. Blackberry, wild hedgerow with a touch of black olive tapenade. Chewy tannins on the palate, nice weight, more extraction here but not excessive. Spicy, earthy finish with good definition and persistency. A bit of a harridan at the moment but it will benefit from more cellaring and be worth the wait. Drink 2013-2025. Tasted January 2009.

Mid crimson. Fresh and lively. Real spine to this wine. Racy and reminds me of a sword. Clean even if it leaves the palate rather suddenly. Mountain-stream stuff. 13.5%
