Tasting Notes

The noteworthy, classic Margauxs from this estate remain under most consumers’ radar. Displaying low acidity and a forward style, the exotic 2003 is undeniably fragrant, complex, and sexy. Its dark ruby/purple color is followed by sumptuous aromas of truffles, underbrush, plums, cassis, and a hint of figs. The tannin is sweet, and the texture is multilayered. This full-bodied, chewy, round, sensual Margaux should evolve gracefully for 15+ years. Bravo!

Drink 2009-15 Deep crimson. Burnt, tarry nose. Spicy and juicy. Lots to get your teeth into here if you are looking for a thoroughly modern Margaux. Fleshy with only slightly drying tannins on the finish.

A terrific wine and probably a great value given the pricing for this vintage, Malescot Saint-Exupery’s 2002 exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, notes of anise-infused plum, blackberries, and cherries, broad, full-bodied flavors, wonderful density, yet tremendous purity and elegance. A noble wine that exudes gravitas, give it 2-3 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 15-16 years.

A stunning effort, and one of this year’s best buys, this 2002 has one of the vintage’s most beautiful bouquets. A deep saturated ruby/purple color is followed by a glorious concoction of spring flowers intermixed with black currants, cherries, minerals, and lead pencil shavings. Medium-bodied and concentrated, with a sweet mid-palate, ripe tannin, and a long, delineated, impeccable finish, this is a brilliant effort from Malescot St.-Exupery, which does not appear to have made any mistakes for over a decade. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2019
