The owner has poured squillions into making the wine taste like a young Pomerol. The property is only just over the border from Castillon, after all. The magician of Eglise Clinet Denis Durantou is now consulting. Damn fine. Gamey, ripe and hedonistic. Giles Coren's professed best house red ever (according to Twitter). VGV [very good value].
I tried it for the first time last week and it is bloody good. Chateau Thénac is in Bergerac, to the east of Bordeaux, but you could think of this wine as a pocket-money Pomerol. It's lovely, made with 75 per cent merlot, 15 per cent cabernet franc and 10 per cent cabernet sauvignon. Being from the ripe 2009 vintage it is rounded and plump and ever so easy to drink, but not flabby. It also has at its heart a trace of the drinking chocolate Poulain powder that I often find in right bank bordeaux.
Bergerac is one of the Bordeaux outposts where the wines are very similar in style but often a lot less expensive in price. I cannot express in a few lines just how terrific this wine is, suffice to say that it is from the epic 2009 vintage and it is rich, powerful and dominated by the regal Merlot grape on tiptop form. This is one of the best value red wines of the year. Do not miss out on the opportunity to secure stock of this wondrous wine. It will age well for a further five years, too.
