Under the impressive Belgian ownership, this property has been on a hot streak for a number of years. The 2013's final blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot came from only 35% of the harvest, which took place between September 28 and October 18. The wine exhibits a dark plum/ruby/purple color as well as notes of graphite, licorice, blueberries, black raspberries and a hint of barbecue smoke, and a medium-bodied, rich, concentrated mouthfeel and finish. There is no evidence of rot, astringent tannin or excessive acidity. It has turned out to be one of the more successful wines in this vintage. Enjoy it over the next 12-15 years.
I tasted the Malartic-Lagraviere Rouge on three separate occasions but could not find a sample that really convinced (unlike the white, I might add). It is a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot picked from 28 September until 22 October, raised in 70% new wood. The bouquet has a tangible "coolness" that I like - boysenberry and bilberry fruit all well defined. So far so good. The palate is plump on the entry with a lot of furry tannins that coat the mouth, but here there is a green element that pokes out on the finish. I would like to re-taste this after bottling. Tasted April 2014.
Very pretty wine with blueberry, currant and mineral aromas and flavors. Full to medium body, ultra-fine tannins and a delicious finish. Drink of hold.
Very attractive core of berry, mineral and fresh-tobacco character. Medium to full body, velvety tannins. Balanced.
