Côte Rôtie La Landonne, Etienne Guigal 2013

Tasting Notes

The gem of the lineup (and my money is on the wine of the vintage), the 2013 Côte Rôtie La Landonne sports a deep purple color and killer notes of blackcurrants, black olives, game, and spice. It picks up more minerality with time in the glass and offers a full-bodied, powerful, concentrated style on the palate. With awesome tannin quality (but lots of them) and integrated, yet high acidity, forget bottles for 7-8 years. It should keep for 2-3 decades. 2025 - 2050

100% Syrah. Quite different to its brethren (perhaps due to the lack of Viognier?) with a stemmy, herbal note adding a welcome extra dimension to the palate. Sleek black fruit, lovely fine but bold tannin which gives a long, chewy finish. There’s a lot of complexity and breadth on display here, and if you like that stemmy element, it is very appealing indeed. (RH) Drink 2020-2040

The inky black-colored 2013 Côte Rôtie La Landonne is certainly one of the gems in the vintage, and it has more texture, depth and richness than just about every other wine out there. Charred fruits, black, black fruits, espresso, crushed rock and wood smoke all emerge from this full-bodied, concentrated Côte Rôtie that certainly shows a masculine style, yet still possesses incredible purity and elegance.

What will most likely be the wine of the vintage, the 2013 Cote Rotie la Landonne is excruciatingly backwards and tannic at present, yet has the requisite density, concentration and purity to handle its structure. Crushed rock and impenetrable black fruits are the name of the game here, and I suspect it will take 15 years for this beast to round into form.
